Reversing Lab: Hidden Config Parser

A reversing writeup pattern for moving from strings to control flow, then reconstructing parser behavior.

#Reversing #Static Analysis #Ghidra

Overview

This challenge hides validation behavior inside a small configuration parser. The target is to recover the accepted input format.

Method

1. Start with strings and imports to understand the program surface. 2. Rename functions around file parsing, comparison, and error output. 3. Track branch conditions that reject candidate input. 4. Reconstruct the grammar in plain language before trying a final answer.

Takeaways

  • Good function names make the decompiler output much easier to audit.
  • Reversing notes should separate observed facts from guesses.
  • A reconstructed parser is more valuable than a one-line answer.
